Captain John A. Piatek was born in Newark, New Jersey, 12/13/1925 Date of Death: 11/03-09 and has been in the U.S. Navy since 1943, having entered through the V-12 program. He attended Drew University in Madison, New Jersey, and received his midshipman training at Columbia University in New York City.

​During his naval career, Captain Piatek has served aboard USS PETROF BAY (CVE-80), USS LST-601, USS CHARLES S. SPERRY (DD697), and USS PARLE (DE-708), serving as Executive Officer in the latter. In 1961, Captain Piatek participated in SoLant Amity as Commanding Officer of USS SUFFOLK COUNTY (LST1173).

​He has, in addition, served tours of duty in Staff Communications for the Supreme Allied Commander, U.S. Atlantic Fleet, and as Training Officer and Officer in Charge of the Leadership School at Fleet Training Center, Norfolk, Virginia.

​From August 1962 to June 1965 Captain Piatek served as Executive Officer of U.S. Naval Officer Candidate School and U.S. Naval Schools Command, Newport, Rhode Island. He assumed command of NORRIS on 10 July 1965 until 08 July 1966. Rank was Commander.
