Gerald F. Horna was born 16 June 1937 in Cleveland, Ohio. Since 1948, he has made Wallingford, Pennsylvania his home. He graduated from West Chester State Teachers College, in West Chester, Pennsylvania and was commissioned an Ensign in June 1959. He was subsequently promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander on 1 June 1968.

Following commissioning Lieutenant Commander Horna served as Communications Officer at the Fleet Weather Central in Guam; as Communications Officer onboard the USS SAMUEL B. ROBERTS (DD-823); completed Naval Destroyer School as a student in February 1963; as Operations Officer on USS PUTNAM (DD 759); as Readiness and Training Officer on the Staff of Commander Cruiser-Destroyer Flotilla EIGHT; as Aide and Flag Secretary to Commander Middle East Force, home ported in Manama, Bahrain; and he joined NORRIS following two WESTPAC deployments to the gunline onboard the USS NEWPORT NEWS (CA-148), the first as CIC Officer and the second as Navigator for which he earned the Navy Commendation Medal. He reported to the NORRIS as Executive Officer in December 1969.

Lieutenant Commander Horna is married to the former Geraldine Feler of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and they have three children; Gillian 8, Gerald Jr. 7, and David 1. The Horna's reside at Quarters 16, Rainbow Heights, at the Naval Base in Newport, Rhode Island.

Following decommissioning of the NORRIS, Lieutenant Commander Horna will report to the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, for a staff officer assignment in the Strategic Plans and Policy Division.
